Photographic Equipment Group
There is a huge variety of photographic equipment you will want to get – look after all your camera equipment and it will last for years to come

In this section I will try to give some very basic advice on how to use your photographic equipment. This advice is aimed at anyone just starting to get serious about his or her photography and covers just the basic essentials that every photographer should know. If you are already confident using your photographic equipment this section is probably not for you - but you will find more advanced tips and hints in other sections of my site.

Photographic Equipment Maintenance
Regular servicing and maintenance is essential to keep your photographic equipment in tip-top working order

Maintenance

However much money you spent on your photographic equipment, if you want it to give you good service for years to come, it is essential to maintain it properly. Poorly maintained equipment will not continue to give you the results it did when it was new and may even stop working! Digital SLR cameras do need periodic servicing. Mostly this is a cleaning process – but I would advise you not to try to do this yourself. The internal workings of a DSLR camera are EXTREMELY DELICATE and can easily be irreparably damaged. The mirror, shutter curtain, low pass filter and light receptor are particularly susceptible to damage and any maintenance (other than as suggested by your user manual) should be left to the professional.

Use

The correct use of your photographic equipment is obviously essential to make the most of it. Always read any instructions/user manuals that came with it and experiment! This is the best way to find out just what is – and isn’t possible. Take the same picture from the same position in the same lighting conditions but use different settings. This way you will have a practical demonstration of what effects your changed settings have on your images – but remember to keep a record of your settings so you can replicate them in the future.

I hope the pages in this section will help beginners to “get to know” their photographic equipment. When you have some photos that you are pleased with please upload them to the gallery!
