When to use a Camera Tripod

“Even with high-speed lenses and lenses that come with VR (vibration reduction) there are times when a camera tripod really is a must to get that pin-sharp shot"

Camera Tripod
Using a Camera Tripod is virtually guaranteed to eliminate "shake"!

The biggest advantage of using a camera tripod is the improved image quality you can produce. The sharpness of your photograph does not always seem noticeable when you print off a smaller picture, but when you start to crop an image or print off larger sized copies you will then notice if your image is razor-sharp or blurry. Taking a picture using a camera tripod will give a far crisper image than when taking a hand held shot - even if you have used a fast shutter speed.

Although the main object of using a camera tripod is to avoid fuzzy, blurry pictures, the other good thing is that you, the photographer, can concentrate fully on your subject, especially if your niche is taking portraits.
Camera Tripod - Remote Controls
Using a remote control to take your picture is a good way to keep your images sharp!

Unlike hand held shots, using a camera tripod and remote control (or cable release) allows you to move around and interact with your subject and build up a relationship - and this should make them more relaxed resulting in a more “natural” pose. If you don’t have a remote control (or cable release), use your camera’s self-timer. Even if the camera only moves slightly when you press the shutter your picture will be blurry – but by using a camera tripod and remote control (or cable release/self timer) you can eliminate this annoying problem.

Most professional photographers nearly always use a camera tripod, especially when taking wedding portraits or sports assignments. As you will have probably noticed, photographers at tennis matches always use a camera tripod or monopod to steady their massive lenses.

If you are a keen landscape photographer then you will definitely need some sort of camera tripod, especially when taking pictures in low light conditions. Try to get one with a weight hook at the bottom of the column; this is useful for attaching your gadget bag, which will give additional stability.

Whatever your picture subject, using your camera tripod will enable you to use any shutter speed you fancy and give you a lot more creative flexibility and control over your depth of field.

I suggest that (as I do) you keep a camera tripod in the boot of your car - you never know when it might be needed! With any outdoor photography, particularly on dark evenings or when a long exposure is required, you will need more than a steady hand!
